1. David McGuinness (leader of the fab Concerto Caledonia) reveals in his blog that “in the post yesterday came 16 new songs from Alasdair Roberts: not to be hurried.”

Throwing my hat in the air jubilation: they’ve been recorded!

Skin-crawling envy: you may not be in a hurry, David, but I am… a cool, zen kind of hurry, bien sûr, but a hurry just the same.

  2. Weekly(ish) links 2011-06-19

First off, not strictly speaking a link, but an authoritative source has kindly sent me the titles of three songs that were premiered last Tuesday at Oran Mor, Glasgow:

    1. Peacock Strut
    2. Ananke
    3. The End of Breeding

If you were there, please do share any thoughts, impressions or celebrity anecdotes.

Last week Alasdair DJ’ed a one-hour radio special on “Female Voices of the World”. You can hear it here. I haven’t listened all the way through myself yet, and I don’t know how long it will be available for. For the record, here’s the track list:

    1. Amalia Rodrigues - Fadinho Da Ti Maria Benta
    2. Khaira Arby - Khaira
    3. Elena Ledda - Se Dillu
    4. Las Hermanas Pulido - Toronji Moradia
    5. Roisin Esafty - Oiche Dorcha
    6. Rocino Bazan - Queriendo Pierdo El Sentio
    7. Ingvill Marit Garnas - Rikeball Og Gullborg
    8. Rita Abatzi - Prepei Na Skepetai Kaneis
    9. Interpreti Din Transilvania - Maicuta M-O Leganat
    10. Gulchehra Sodiqova - Falaki Seisma
    11. Musicians of the National Dance Company of Cambodia – Breu Peyney
    12. Telavi Choir - Tsmindao Gmerto

    14. Abida Parveen - Ishq Na Derda Mot Kolon

The Fruit Tree Foundation — comprising Alasdair Roberts, Scott Hutchison, James Graham, Emma Pollock, Rod Jones, James Yorkston, Jill O’Sullivan, Karine Polwart, and Jenny Reeve — will be releasing their album, First Edition, at the end of this month. This is a benefit for mental health. See also Music Like a Vitamin.

  3. Which of these unreleased songs is going to make it on to the next album?

Always impatient, I’m was a bit disappointed when Alasdair’s April and May dates in the UK were listed on the website under the title “Too Long in this Condition” tour. I was hoping they might be scheduled to coincide with a new album. Duncan’s question yesterday about Song Composed in December sent me back to the last list of unreleased songs I made, over a year ago. Since then, I’m only aware of two new songs in Ali’s repertoire: The Sacred Nine and the Primal Horde, and The Wheels of the World.

Here’s the full list of songs that I know of, in roughly chronological order of appearance.

    1. Scandal and Trance
    2. What Cares the Crow for the Plaint of Lapwing?
    3. The Haruspex of Paradox
    4. The Untrue Womb (title?)
    5. Green Wood Waxes Early (title?) — YouTube
    6. The Loudness Wars
    7. The Boy of Blazing Brow
    8. Song Composed in December
    9. The Laverock in the BlackthornYouTube
    10. The Hidden Sin
    11. The Sacred Nine and the Primal Horde
    12. The Wheels of the WorldYouTube
    13. Two songs with unknown titles, played in Edinburgh with Robin Robertson in February 2011

The song titles link to the stats for where the song has been played; and there are YouTube videos of performances of three of them.

Please, if you know of any more songs, do let me know. I don’t say this enough here, but this site isn’t here for me to show off what I can do on my own. There are big gaps in my knowledge, and I’ll be really grateful if you can help fill in any of them. Setlists, mere mentions of songs, or vague rumours passed on by shady operators — all are welcome.

Still, even if there are no further new songs beyond these fourteen, I can’t see them all fitting on a single album, as few are short, and The Wheels of the World is over nine minutes. I don’t know what I’m going to do with myself if I have to wait another six or more months for a new album and then one of my favourites, like What Cares the Crow…? isn’t on it.
